Synopsis:
‘Carmen from Kawachi brings the nihilist Suzuki universe to a woman’s life in the decidedly unsentimental education of a provincial factory worker, Tsuyuko, whose rape by two fellow villagers starts her on the road to sexual awareness and finally, independence. It is a long, picaresque road indeed, meandering from Osaka’s Club Dada, through liaisons with a millionaire, a dominatrix, and an action painter–all the while cohabiting with a degenerate if loving roué. The determining encounter is with a corrupt monk, whose sordid affair with her mother had been for Tsuyuko a primal introduction to sexual hypocrisy and male brutality.’

Kon Ichikawa – Sasame-yuki AKA The Makioka Sisters (1983)

This lyrical adaptation of the beloved novel by Junichiro Tanizaki was a late-career triumph for director Kon Ichikawa. Structured around the changing of the seasons, The Makioka Sisters (Sasame-yuki) follows the lives of four siblings who have taken on their family’s kimono manufacturing business, in the years leading up to the Pacific War. The two oldest have been married for some time, but according to tradition, the rebellious youngest sister cannot wed until the third, conservative and terribly shy, finds a husband. This graceful study of a family at a turning point in history is a poignant evocation of changing times and fading customs, shot in rich, vivid colors. (~Criterion)

Kei Kumai – Sen no Rikyu AKA Death of a Tea Master (1989)

Quote:
For those unfamiliar with its deep meaning, the Japanese tea ceremony appears to be a long, incredibly boring, basically uneventful ritual process. In contrast, for many of its practitioners it offers the key to understanding how to live life in a meaningful manner, and is in itself a refreshment for the spirit. The tea master Rikyu was a key figure in the evolution of the ceremony, and his teaching lineage continues to the present day. In 1591, as a result of a difference of opinion with the ruling warlord of Japan, Hideyoshi Toyotomi (Shinsuke Ashida), tea ceremony grand master Rikyu (Toshiro Mifune) was forced to commit suicide. This story is told in a series of flashbacks, as Honkakubo, Rikyu’s closest disciple, contemplates the death of his master and his associates, and seeks to clarify his understanding of those events. In this film these suicides are interpreted as a clash between spirituality and materialism. In Rikyu, the other 1989 film about the tea master, his political differences with the general are brought forward. – Clarke Fountain, Rovi, New York Times

Quote:
Years after the death of legendary tea master Rikyu, his disciple Honkakubo attempts to resolve the mystery of the master’s death. Years before: Sen Rikyu is a ceremonial tea master who advises warlord Hideyoshi in sixteenth-century feudal Japan. His daughter, the beautiful Lady Ogin, has an unrequited love for Lord Ukon, who has angered Hideyoshi by becoming a Christian convert. Ogin’s father Rikyu also displeases Hideyoshi by opposing the warlord’s plan to invade China and Korea. When the animalistic Hideyoshi is rejected by Ogin, he threatens her and her father with arrest and worse. – Summary by Jim Beaver, IMDB

Kihachi Okamoto directs his 37th film with this sweet-natured satire about bungling cops and tax scams. The story opens with an 84-year-old widow and grandmother (Tanie Kitabayashi), who lives in a palatial estate in rural Wakayama prefecture, getting jumped by a trio of bumbling thugs (Toru Kazama, Katsuyoshi Uchida, and Hiroshi Nishikawa) and shoved into their waiting car. Instead of being afraid for her life, she is — to the chagrin of her would-be captors — having the time of her life. Soon the strong-willed granny takes command of her own kidnapping, offering the house of her former maid as a hideout and suggesting the amount of the ransom — ten million yen. Soon the press gets wind of the crime and it soon balloons into a major media event, as the grandmother’s four children fret and consult with the police. Ken Ogata also appears as the crime’s lead detective and long-time friend of the grandmother.

Yuuri Sunohara – Jogakusei: Harakiri AKA Zankoku-bi: Onna harakiri 02 AKA School Girl Harakiri (1990)

$

Quote:
A young girl in a sailor moon outfit, sits quietly in an empty room, looking at a photo album of girls (from earlier films in this series) who have commit harakiri. The viewing and thought of the suicide turns her on, much in the way that extreme desire and input draw us closer to feeling we have found something tangible. She believes she has found it, so much that she must feel closer to the experience, and the only way to do so is to commit harakiri herself.

The movie is short but moves at a snail’s pace, prolonging every emotion, every fleeting sense of emptiness this girl feels, the desperate need to feel, and feel control of her life.

Almost pornographic the girl is overcome with the sheer sense if conviction, feeling close to oneself through revealing and the ritual. So much so, she can taste it.

She literally spends 1/3 of the film enraptured by the thought and flooding sensations of the thought, building up the euphoria required to step in and pick up the knife, and in numb curiosity, achieve the act itself.

she handles the blade with such delicate reverence, like one might caress a lover. Only to sheathe the blade slowly, and place it back on the mat before her.

Now she undresses, slowly, nonchalant, folding her clothing nice and neat beside herself, as if innocently, not actually preparing for anything, almost in secret, where the Gods cannot find her.

She touches her naked body, imagining the cuts, the parallel of her inner torment played out as if meant to be made manifest.

She picks up the blade again with excruciating hesitance and uncertainty, wraps the blade so as to not hold by the handle but by the blade itself, for fear of slipping and dropping the knife in cowardice? The act itself hits one like a burning fire. It is easy to contemplate such things. to romanticize, to delve…. but to actually chase the goal and find it, I literally felt like I was on fire watching her commit the act.

For we do not hear her speak, or know her, but we do know her. The youthful confusion, the pain for pleasure in seeking control in life, the desperation, the hopelessness, and the uncertainty of our bodies, and our emotions, as we begin to discover independence and will.

I could empathize with her so deeply, that i literally felt I was being torn apart through the process, and it was staggering. I did not expect it, perhaps it was the droning background haunting the scene, drawing us in, opening us up. Or the subtle looks of longing, loss, confusion, that any of us can relate. Whatever it was, I found it greatly disturbing, and worth investigating.

Quote:
This is a second part of Japanese extreme gore series about harakiri. If you saw any of them before, than probably you know what to expect for. If you don’t saw any of this extreme flicks, then I’ll try to explain what should you expect for. First of all – don’t expect for any plot in this movie! If you aren’t gory movies fan than this movie is not for you. During the whole film you’ll see Japanese girl dressed like a schoolgirl. She’ll perform harakiri right before your eyes (of course it’s not real but it looks pretty realistic). Finally she dies. The action is slow, everything is very detailed in this movie. The girls death is long and painful – after she cuts her abdomen, she pulls out her intestine and only after that she dies. Like I said – effects look pretty realistic, so the gore lovers should like this one piece. Otherwise – I don’t see any point in watching this if you’re not gore fan…

Sometimes Mr Murata thinks that it was just yesterday when he was 50 or 60. “And now I’m pushing 90,” he says.
Like many parts of rural Japan, the fishing village of Ushimado suffers from an ageing population. Every day, Mr Murata still takes his boat out on the inland sea that separates Honshu and Shikoku, two of Japan’s main islands. He sells his catch at the local market, with a large share going to Mrs Koso, who runs the local fish trade and tours the village daily in her delivery van. She knows her customers’ preferences and habits inside out and tells the filmmakers how long each of the empty houses has been abandoned.Ushimado provides the ideal spot for the patient observations made in Kazuhiro Soda’s Minatomachi, which is shot in mesmerising black and white. This location isn’t just perfect because the film’s producer Kiyoko Kashiwagi’s family hails from the village, nor because Shohei Imamura shot two features here. It’s perfect because all that’s needed is to listen and follow the local people, who – like the elderly Mrs Komiyama – occasionally hijack the camera and tell heart-breaking stories no outsider has ever wanted to hear.

Tadashi Imai – Himeyuri no Tô AKA Tower of the Lilies (1953)

Quote:
Tower of the Lilies is the true story of a group of high school girls on the island of Okinawa, who were mobilized into military service as nurses in the closing months of World War II.

The girls, around 200 in all, were thrust into the Battle of Okinawa, one of the fiercest and bloodiest battles in the Pacific. Known as the Himeyuri Corps, they were ordered to join the medical units in large bunker caves where injured soldiers received treatment.

As American forces gained a foothold in the southern part of Okinawa and pressed further inland, and with casualties mounting ever higher, the medical units were forced to relocate to a series of caves. After three months of intense fighting, once the Americans finally broke through the last lines of defense, the Japanese military disbanded the Himeyuri Corps. The girls were left to fend for themselves in the face of enemy tanks and the hail of artillery, called the Typhoon of Steel.

The film was an enormous success. Japanese audiences strongly identified with the shared sacrifice and perseverance of civilians during the war. The film spawned no less than four remakes, including one by the original director himself, Tadashi Imai. Filmed shortly after the end of the Allied Occupation, it was one of the first films produced in Japan to cast the Japanese military in a negative light, though critic Donald Ritchie says, “If it is ‘anti’ anything, the film is anti-war.”

The large cast includes such stars as, Kyoko Kagawa, Keiko Tsushima, Eiji Okada, and Susumu Fujita.

The second of Nikkatsu’s trilogy of softcore melodramas looking at prostitution in various Japanese cities, this dark look at ritualistic temple sex in Edo from director Noboru Tanaka is quite a departure from the light, comic tone of Chusei Sone’s Maruhi: Joro Ichiba. Resembling nothing so much as an Asian version of all those Roman-set Italian sex films of the 1970s, the film deals with various members of Japanese royalty subjecting women to sadomasochistic sexual practices in the temple for supposedly religious reasons. Rie Nakagawa stars with Yuri Yamashina, Moeko Ezawa, and Hijiri Abe.

Quote:
One of Hani’s recurring themes was the status of women in modern society. His first attempt at the subject was this Antonioniesque melodrama set in a sterile high rise complex. A woman resident becomes discontent with the empty life she and her husband are leading. They encounter a street beggar who lives in poverty with his dog and a blind orphan. The woman becomes fascinated by the beggar’s world and pursues a friendship which leads to terrible discord and a tragedy.

“A minutely observed, intimate and unsentimental drama of social consciousness that uncovers the spiritual wasteland of suburbia, and explores the barriers erected by differences of class, money and, above all, aspiration.” —Holt’s Foreign Film Guide.

Quote:
“A Japanese novelist once wrote that we should be very thankful that our eyes are not in our hands, because if they were we would always have to see our own faces. I think this is fascinating concept. Sometimes we can achieve this in the cinema. Of course when you are acting, your ‘eye’ should see your face, but when you view rushes, your eyes are constantly in your hands. I find it extremely interesting to observe the relationship between cinema and the perception of one’s own image.”
